From Organizations to Goal-Directedness: Systemic and Interdisciplinary Modeling.

In the framework of the project "Origins of Goal-directedness" we are organizing an international workshop at the Residencia Carmen de la Victoria in Granada, Spain

Topic:

General systemic theories attempt to explain the functioning of biological, cognitive, social, and other kinds of organizations from structural principles. One of the major questions about the functioning of a general system is what is its goal. The theory of cybernetics specifies the conditions needed for effective goal-directedness: reference levels, feedback, requisite variety of actions and knowledge, hierarchy, feedforward and buffering. However, the development of these concepts encompassing both a systemic and interdisciplinary perspective, as well as the power of mathematical modelling and computational simulation is still an open challenge. The impact of such developments would help us to better understand phenomena that range from the emergence of living systems to macro-phenomena such as global warming, globalized capitalism, and the future of our digital society.

In this workshop we will cover recent developments of conceptual and philosophical frameworks, mathematical models, and applied cases of phenomena where the reductionist paradigm fails due to the systemic nature of the object of study, and will put particular focus on the goals of such objects. Of special interest are interdisciplinary phenomena with several entities and complex contextual interactions, such as ecological systems, human-environment relations, socio-technological adaptations, and creativity-able systems.
