After the first introductory seminar to the Chemical Organization Theory (COT) and it’s potential crossover (intra-action) with the music domain by Dr. Tomas Veloz - in the second session prof. Christian Jendreiko will present the possibilities for applying COT that he has been researching with the small team and students at the HSD Dusseldorf.
Christian Jendreiko: „Within the research project Artificial Intuition, our research group is exploring the potential of COT as a generative tool for the making of narrative structures. I will give a short overview of my work, our findings in the last semester – and our questions.“
Christian Jendreiko is an artist and a professor of Digital Communication at HSD University of Applied Science in Duesseldorf. His research is focused on experimental generative systems and the development of artificial intuition.
In his work he follows an approach whereby sound is considered less of a standalone object and more of a medium in which humans appear along with their aesthetic actions. These “Instrumentalaktionen,“ often performed by large ensembles of musicians and non-musicians over the course of several days, Jendreiko understands them as a form of generative artistic research and “dynamic plasticity“ (Isabel Hufschmidt/Christian Jendreiko). His works and performances are displayed in museums, galleries and institutions all over the world.
In 2003, a set of his works were included into the collection of the Musée national d’Art Moderne, Centre Pompidou, Paris. For the last 35 years, Jendreiko has been collaborating with Stefan Werni on the duo Werni & Jendreiko, developing their shared concept of ‘Spekulative Elektronik’ (‘Speculative Electronics’). Since 1998, he has been a member of the Düsseldorf-London-based artist group hobbypopMUSEUM.

The Origins of Goal-directedness:
a Formal Scenario based on Chemical Organization Theory and Cybernetics
This project proposes to develop a scenario for the self-organization of goal-directed systems out of networks of (chemical) reactions. Related scenarios have been proposed to explain the origin of life starting from autocatalytic sets, but these sets tend to be too unstable and dependent on their environment to maintain. The new formalism of Chemical Organization Theory shows mathematically under which conditions reaction networks self-organize into self-maintaining, autopoietic “organizations”. Through computer simulations, we will investigate what is needed to make an organization resilient, i.e. able to reach its goals in the face of environmental challenges. Using specially developed algorithmic tools, we will randomly generate and perturb computer-generated organizations, and select the ones that survive these perturbations, thus evolving increasingly resilient organizations.
