Karen François
Biography
As a philosopher of science, I am professor at the Centre of Logic and Philosophy of Science (CLPS) at Brussels Free University (VUB). Together with co-directors Steffen Ducheyne, Bart Van Kerkhove and Patrick Allo, I am managing the research center CLPS since 2018. As from 2024, I have been appointed director of the new large research group CLEA-CLPS, in which Françis Heylighen is the research contact.
I teach the Ba-course Science and Society, the Ma-course Phenomenological approach to the sciences, and the Research Ma-course Developing & Writing Research Proposals in Philosophy.
My research focuses on the Philosophy of Science and Mathematics, Mathematics & Statistics Education, Mathematical, Statistical and (Big) Data Literacy, Science and Society, Scientific Integrity, Methodology, Phenomenology, Philosophy of Mathematics Education, and I published international articles in these fields.
Since 2011 I serve as the Director of the Doctoral School of Human Sciences at VUB where I manage and organize multiple activities to assist PhD students in extending and improving their capabilities, in succeeding in gaining a PhD https://student.vub.be/phd/dsh#about-dsh
In 2011 I helped establish the Flanders Training Network for Methodology and Statistics (FLAMES); a joint training initiative of the five Flemish universities. FLAMES support young researchers in their pursuit of best-in-class training in methodology and statistics. Since 2016 I act as the spokesperson of this interuniversity initiative.
