Artist Jacob van der Beugel and philosopher Sabina Leonelli have collaborated with filmmaker Oliver Page towards an art movie examining the notion of ‘data shadows’, which Sabina pioneered (and discusses at length in a forthcoming book).
Data are made — created and extracted by humans taking snapshots of a world in constant motion. They are images, measurements, artefacts that can embody and exemplify nature.
Data transform — their state changing as they undergo their journey through human landscapes: solid or liquid, corpuscular or massive.
Data grow — they cluster with others, form assemblages that travel together, break apart, redistribute and fragment across space and time. They come undone by challenges as yet unforeseen.
Data have surroundings — their situations give them meaning. Shedding light on data mean interrogating the shadows around them.
Data return to dust, just as humans eventually do. "
